“Ashdod” without a quarter number tells us nothing

Ashdod is laid out in numbered quarters, from the first up to the sixteenth, and they were built decades apart from one another. An older quarter in the south of the city and a new one by the marina are two different worlds: the age of the buildings, the size of the flats, the parking and the neighbours are all different.

So the first thing we ask for here is a quarter number or a street name rather than just the city. In a city this size it changes both the arrival time we commit to and what we suggest.

Older quarters against newer ones

The older quarters went up in the 1960s and 1970s. Four to eight floors, a small lift that sometimes does not exist, walls that carry sound, and street parking that is easy to find. The flats are not small, but they are divided into rooms rather than open plan. For a show you clear a table and roll up a rug, and that is enough.

The newer quarters, mainly around the city centre and the marina, are another world: towers, open living rooms of seventy square metres and up, good insulation and underground parking with a lift straight to the floors. There the dancer comes up without passing the lobby at all, which is the most discreet arrangement we have anywhere. All we need is a gate code and a floor number.

The marina and the quarters on the sea

The marina and beachfront area is the part that most resembles a resort, and holiday-style bookings come from it: flats taken for a weekend, groups arriving from elsewhere, and occasionally a hotel.

There are hotels in Ashdod, but few, and it is not a strip like Netanya. The rules are the same as any hotel: the dancer goes up alone in ordinary street clothes, does not stop in the lobby and says nothing at reception. The full picture is on the hotel booking page.

As for sea-facing balconies, the same issue as in any coastal city. There is a steady breeze in the evening, it moves fabric and puts out candles, and a thin costume simply stops working in it. The show happens indoors next to the open door with the sea left as the backdrop.

The southernmost point we cover

Getting to Ashdod takes fifty-five to seventy minutes, and this is the southern edge of the range we drive at the standard price. We say so openly because it affects planning more than any other detail.

Two consequences. A spontaneous booking for an hour from now does not work here; a day ahead solves it, and two days at a weekend. And the return-journey charge that applies after one in the morning is more noticeable at this distance than in the centre. It is always quoted in the message before anything is confirmed, and if your timing is flexible, finishing at eleven rather than one saves money.

Large flats and large groups

The average Ashdod flat is bigger than its Tel Aviv equivalent and costs less. The result is familiar to us from Holon and Kfar Saba: larger groups.

Fifteen people in an Ashdod living room is routine. Above twelve it is worth considering a duo show — with a big group a solo show leaves half the room feeling like distant spectators, which is a waste when the space is there.

One caveat: in an older building with fifteen guests, what carries outside is the audience rather than the music. One sentence to the group before you start makes the whole difference.

Languages

Ashdod has a large Russian-speaking community and some of the enquiries we get from the city arrive in Russian. What we can state for certain: correspondence with us runs in Hebrew or English, and every dancer we work with performs in English. What people book here

Bachelor parties first, most of them in flats rather than hotels. Then birthdays and home bookings, which are effectively all the rest.

Company events come mainly from the industrial zone and the port, and they look different: an early hour, a mixed audience, and a set built for the room rather than for a named individual.

Styles

A large living room opens up the styles that need movement: club sets, go-go and latino and samba. For a smaller group or a hotel room, burlesque and lap dance work better.

Arrival and price

Fifty-five to seventy minutes depending on the quarter and the hour. Peak traffic at the entrance to the city pushes it to the top of the range; after ten at night it sits at the bottom.
