The Raanana border is effectively invisible

Start with the thing that confuses us most about these two cities. Kfar Saba and Raanana run into each other, and on some streets there is no way to tell which one you are standing in without checking. People write to us saying “Kfar Saba” and are in fact a three-minute drive from the centre of Raanana, and the other way round.

So our standing request here is a street name, not just a city name. A kilometre in this strip can change the arrival time by a quarter of an hour, and we would rather give you the right number from the start.

Bigger than its neighbour, and cheaper

Kfar Saba is larger and more mixed than Raanana. There are older neighbourhoods of private houses with yards, newer towers in the east, and a substantial industrial and business zone. Property here costs less than in Raanana, and that feeds directly into the kind of bookings we get.

The most common pattern in the whole Sharon region comes from here: a group rents an entire house for a weekend. That settles the neighbours, the parking and the hour all at once, which is why bookings from Kfar Saba tend to be larger and later than those from next door.

A rented house for the weekend: what to check

If that is your situation, three things are worth establishing before we agree a time.

What is underfoot. Half of these houses are paved and the other half have decking or lawn. Grass does not work for a show, heels sink into it. If lawn is all there is, we set up in the living room.

Until when. An owner who asked for quiet after one is not making a suggestion, that is a condition. Tell us in advance and we plan the show earlier rather than stopping halfway.

How many of you. A whole house invites a big group, which is excellent until you discover a solo show is not enough for twenty people. Above twelve, a duo show splits the attention and holds a large room.

Older neighbourhoods against the new towers

Two worlds in one city, and the difference is practical.

In Greenberg, Kaplan and Hadarim there are private and semi-detached houses with yards. The consideration there is horizontal: the fence, the yard and an open window. You can run a little louder than in a flat, but only with the show indoors and the windows shut.

In the newer towers in the east of the city there is underground parking with a lift running straight up, exactly like the newer parts of Petah Tikva. For discretion that is the cleanest arrangement we have: the dancer steps out of the car in the car park and goes up without passing the lobby. What we need from you is a gate code and a floor number.

The industrial zone and the hospital

Kfar Saba has a large employment district and a major hospital, and between them they produce bookings at hours we barely see anywhere else.

Company evenings from the business zone are the standard kind: early, between seven and half past nine, a meeting room or an open area. But there is something here that no other city on this site produces — bookings from teams that work shifts. A birthday for someone who came off shift at four in the afternoon gets celebrated at six in the evening, and that is an hour we almost never see elsewhere.

We do work at hours like that. It simply has to be arranged in advance: at six in the evening nobody is on the road yet, so notice matters more here than it does for a midnight booking.

The drive, and what actually changes it

Getting to Kfar Saba takes forty-five to sixty minutes, and most of the variation comes from the hour rather than the address. Between four and seven the approach to the Sharon is heavy and the time sits at the top of that range. After ten it runs clear and the window shortens.

So the simple recommendation: if your timing is flexible, book for ten rather than eight. You get a faster arrival and you stay clear of the return-journey charge that applies after one in the morning.

What people book here

Bachelor parties first, most of them in a rented house. Then birthdays in private homes, then company evenings from the business zone. Home bookings are effectively all the rest, because there are no hotels in the city.

Anyone who wants the hotel format goes to Herzliya. Anyone who wants something different picks a cabin further north — from Kfar Saba the drive to the northern Sharon and the lower Galilee is considerably shorter than from Tel Aviv, which is a real reason to consider it.

Styles

A whole house with a large living room opens up what suffocates in a small flat: club sets, go-go and latino with the wide movement they need. Pole is possible where a pole is installed, and in private houses that happens fairly often.

For an office in the business zone the choice inverts: burlesque and fashion. Two dancers who hold a large room well are Karina Voronskaya and Shira Leon, and the full catalogue with styles is a page away.

Forty-five to sixty minutes depending on the hour. There is no distance surcharge for Kfar Saba; it sits inside the range we cover at the standard price.
