Three towns under one name

Ashkelon is large and sharply divided, and without the name of the quarter we have no idea what is waiting for us.

Barnea and the marina in the north are the new part: buildings with sea balconies, car parks, wide streets. Afridar in the middle is an older garden suburb of low houses. The city centre and the southern quarters are built more densely, with blocks from the seventies.

Those three areas need different preparation, different arrival times and sometimes a different style. So in the first message we ask for the quarter, not just the address.

Afridar: the circular streets

Afridar has a layout with no equivalent in the country — a British garden suburb from the fifties, with round squares and streets that curve in circles instead of meeting at angles.

It is pleasant to live in. Finding an address there at night is another matter. Streets change name halfway along, numbers do not run in sequence, and satnav suggests turns that do not exist. It is the only neighbourhood on our list where we ask for both a junction and a map pin.

As a venue it is excellent: detached houses with gardens, space, street parking and no neighbour through the wall. Every style works there, including go-go and a duo.

Sea balconies in Barnea, and the wind

In Barnea and around the marina almost every flat has a balcony facing the sea, and almost every client wants the show out there.

Anyone who lives there knows the problem: this coast is completely open, with no bay and no shelter, and the westerly wind blows hard all afternoon. Fabric flies, hair goes in the face, and a speaker sounds like it is coming from the flat next door.

What works is waiting. The wind drops around nine in the evening and almost stops by ten. After that the balcony is genuinely pleasant, and cooler than the living room. So in Ashkelon we suggest starting later than usual, and not because of traffic.

If you want it early anyway, do the number indoors and go out to the balcony afterwards.

Summer: the town fills with holidaymakers

Between June and September Ashkelon fills up with holiday lets, mostly in Barnea and along the shore, and the booking profile changes with it.

Two things follow. The convenient one: when the whole building is on holiday, nobody complains about music at ten at night. The building is awake anyway.

The less convenient one: holiday flats are furnished to a minimum. There are beds and a sofa, but usually no decent speaker, no floor lamp and no chair without arms. Tell us what the flat has and we will adapt — if needed we bring a small speaker of our own.

In winter the town goes back to being an ordinary residential city, and the usual rules come back with it: outdoors until ten, then inside.

A house rented for the weekend

A format that has grown here in recent years: a group rents a whole house for a Saturday and books a show for the evening.

From our side it is the easiest address in the city. There is space, a yard, parking and no attached neighbours. You can start early, finish late, and any format works including VIP.

Two things worth checking with the owner: until what hour music is allowed, and how many guests were agreed. Twenty people in a house let for ten is a story that ends badly, and not because of us.

Who books here

Most bookings are bachelor parties and birthdays for groups of ten to twenty, in a house or a rented flat. A good share of them come from Ashdod and the centre, because renting a house here is easier.

The styles asked for are go-go and lap dance for the groom, and burlesque at mixed evenings. The hotels are mostly along the shore, and those bookings are smaller.

Arrival time

The drive takes sixty to eighty minutes with no surprises, because heading south in the evening is clear. A day ahead is enough on most evenings; at weekends and in summer, two.

What is nearby

Ashkelon borders Ashdod to the north, and Beer Sheva is about an hour east. All three are in a similar travel band, so if your group is undecided between them it makes no difference to us.
