A belt where everything is close to everything

The Shfela is the belt between Gush Dan and the south, and on our list it covers Rishon LeZion, Rehovot, Yavne and Modiin.

What matters most here is not the distance from Tel Aviv but the distance between the cities themselves. Rishon to Rehovot is twenty minutes, Rehovot to Yavne fifteen. A group deciding where to hold the evening can pick between four cities without it affecting anything on our side.

The drive out is thirty-five to sixty minutes depending on the city, with no surcharge to any of them.

Why groups come here from Gush Dan

It happens more often than you would think, and for one reason: space.

In the Shfela, four and five-room flats are the default rather than the exception. A forty-metre living room, a large balcony, and in some quarters houses with yards. The same group of fifteen that is squeezed into a Tel Aviv flat spreads out here without effort.

On top of that there is renting: a house or a flat for one evening costs less here than in the centre, so some groups take a place specifically for the night. From our side that is the easiest format there is — no neighbour who knows you, an early start and a late finish both possible.

One caveat: in a rented flat the rules are the owner’s, not yours. Until what hour music is allowed and how many guests were agreed — find out in advance.

Parking is not an issue here

In all four cities there is parking in the evening, and in some quarters it is free. After Gush Dan it feels like a different country.

Two exceptions. Central Rehovot and the narrow streets around Shaarayim are tight in the evening, and there a junction plus five extra minutes is the answer. And in Yavne most buildings have no lift — not a problem, but tell us the floor in advance and have someone come down to open.

Elsewhere a street and number is enough, and in a newer building with a car park, the code and floor at the confirmation stage.

Four cities, four characters

The strip looks uniform on a map and is not.

Rishon LeZion — the largest and the most varied: new towers in the west, older quarters in the east, and the coast close by.

Rehovot — a city of rented flats around the institute and the faculty, a lot of English, and a railway line that cuts it in two and changes travel times between the sides.

Yavne — the youngest, four-storey walk-ups, and groups booking for the first time.

Modiin — the only one built entirely to a single plan, and therefore the only one where we can guess in advance what the room looks like.

Booking: not Gush Dan, but not the south either

Spontaneous works partly. Midweek, a request for two hours’ time will usually close; on Thursday and Friday it is no longer certain.

The reason is mechanical: the dancers set out from Gush Dan, and whoever has already driven south is booked for the evening. A day ahead solves it nearly always, and if you want a specific name from the catalogue or a duo, make it two.

Which style suits the space here

Because of the room, nearly the whole catalogue is open in the Shfela. A club set and go-go, choked in a city flat, are in their element — provided the building is not too old.

For mixed groups and quieter evenings, burlesque and fashion work. If there is a yard, in summer consider latino: it was made for a terrace in the evening.

Pole is barely booked, simply because a mounted pole at home is rare anywhere.

What to put in your message

The city, the kind of place, the hour and how many of you. If it is a flat rented for the evening, say so, because that changes what is allowed. If it is a house with a yard, say whether the set is indoors or outside.
