The railway that cuts the city in half

Rehovot is built on both sides of a railway line, and that is the first thing we ask about.

There are only a handful of crossings, and at certain hours a closed barrier adds ten minutes easily. Two addresses that look a kilometre apart on a map can be twenty minutes from each other if they are on opposite sides of the tracks.

What that means in practice: “Rehovot” without a quarter is not enough for us to give you an exact hour. Give us the neighbourhood or a nearby junction and you get a real time rather than an average.

A city of rented flats

This is what changes the preparation here more than anything else, and it is unusual among the places we cover.

Around the institute and the faculty there are whole neighbourhoods of flats let for a year or two at a time. The tenants change, and the furniture reflects that: a table, a bed, a sofa, and that is it. No speaker, no floor lamp, sometimes not even a chair without arms.

So what we ask in your message is: tell us what is in the room. If there is no speaker we bring a small one; if there is no side lamp we work with what there is. Better to know in advance than at the door. In our experience this is the city where that one question prevents the most disappointment.

It affects the choice of style as well. In a half-empty flat with no real sound and no furniture, fashion and lap dance work very well, and a club set rather less.

English as the default

Rehovot is a city of scientists, and a good share of them came here from abroad for a fixed period.

In practice that means many of the enquiries here arrive in English, sometimes across an entire conversation without a word of Hebrew. That is no trouble at all: we answer in English and Russian, and several of the dancers work in fluent English.

One thing worth knowing if you are new to the country: the price is in shekels and paid in cash at the end, with no deposit and no card. Everything else can be settled over messages.

The eastern side: houses and gardens

On the eastern side the picture is completely different: private houses with gardens, wide streets and plenty of parking.

Almost anything works there, including go-go and a duo, and an outdoor set until ten in the evening. The way in is through a gate, so someone needs to come out, and if there is a dog, tell us in advance.

It is also the part of the city where the larger birthdays happen, fifteen guests and up. In the centre, in flats, the groups are far smaller.

Parking and hours

In the centre and the older quarters parking is tight in the evening, and in the narrow streets around Shaarayim it is a genuine problem. Give us a junction rather than only a house number and add five minutes to the arrival time.

In the newer quarters and in the east there is no issue at all. If you are in a tower, send the car park code and a floor number at the confirmation stage.

As for hours, Rehovot goes quiet early. After eleven at night, on a residential street, an outdoor set is no longer a good idea. Indoors it limits nothing.

What to put in your message

Four details save a whole round of questions here: the neighbourhood, the hour, how many of you, and what the room has in the way of a speaker and lighting.

That last one sounds odd in most cities and here it is the central question. Two lines about it change the quality of the evening more than the choice of style does.

What is nearby

Rehovot borders Rishon LeZion to the north and Yavne to the south-west, with Modiin a similar distance to the east. All three are in the same price band, with no distance surcharge.
