The one city where the name is already an address

In most places we cover we ask for a neighbourhood, because “Ashdod” or “Hod HaSharon” tells us nothing on its own. In Givat Shmuel that is unnecessary.

The city covers a little over two square kilometres, and driving from one end of it to the other takes four minutes. Every address in it is in the same band, so we can give you an exact hour before we know the street.

What is worth saying in advance is the type of building: a new tower with a car park, or an older block with no lift. That is worth five minutes, and no more than that.

No hotels, no bars, no industry

Givat Shmuel is almost entirely residential. There are no hotels, no employment zone and no going-out street.

The first consequence: nearly every booking here is at your home. There is no “let us have a drink and then go up” stage, and the evening begins and ends in the same place.

The second is more interesting. Because the city is surrounded by other cities on every side, some groups decide at the last minute to move the evening to someone’s flat in Petah Tikva or Ramat Gan. That is entirely fine by us: the price is the same in all three and the drive is short. Just tell us before she sets out rather than after.

Towers in the east, older blocks in the centre

On the eastern side, towards the Petah Tikva boundary, a quarter of new towers has gone up over the last few years. There the picture is standard and convenient: underground parking, a lobby, a lift, decent insulation between flats.

If that is you, send the car park gate code and a floor number at the confirmation stage. Some of those buildings have a staffed lobby, in which case it is better for someone to come down and ride up with her — not because anyone would stop her, but because when the booking is a surprise you do not want a stage with questions in it.

In the centre and on the northern hill the buildings are older, four or five storeys, some without a lift. There we need the floor in advance and someone to open the door.

Dense, so plan the noise

The city is small in area and densely built, which means there is not much air between buildings, and an open window in summer does the rest.

Until ten in the evening it is not an issue. After ten, a club set with real bass on the third floor will be felt above and below. We will not cancel anything; we will suggest arranging the evening the other way round: the loud part early, and burlesque or fashion at the end.

Balconies here are on the small side, so an outdoor set almost never happens in this city. It is nearly always the living room.

Who books here

The common profile is a group of six to twelve in a flat: a birthday, an evening with friends, sometimes a bachelor party that starts early.

The styles chosen most here are burlesque and lap dance — both work well in a medium room and neither needs three metres by three or heavy sound. Pole is almost never booked, simply because nobody here has a pole.

If there are more than fifteen of you, consider moving the evening to a private house in one of the neighbouring cities. In a flat it will be cramped either way.

Arrival time and last-minute bookings

The drive takes thirty to forty minutes and is relatively stable, because the way in is off the Geha road rather than through side streets.

Spontaneous works midweek: a request for an hour’s time on Sunday through Wednesday usually closes. On Thursday and Friday a day ahead is better, and if you want a particular dancer from the catalogue, two days.

What to prepare

• Two and a half metres square of clear floor; roll the rug aside
• A lamp to the side instead of the ceiling light
• A closed room to change in, even a small one
• A mid-sized Bluetooth speaker — this is one place not to bring the big one

And if the booking is a surprise, agree in advance who opens the door and who knows the time. In a small building that matters more than in a tower, because footsteps on the stairs are audible on the whole floor.

Givat Shmuel is surrounded by Petah Tikva to the north and east, Bnei Brak to the west and Ramat Gan to the south-west, with Kiryat Ono ten minutes away. All four are the same price and the same travel band.
