I am the energy, not the atmosphere

Some dancers work on eye contact and a slow tempo. I am not one of them. My set starts strong and stays there, and that is what I do best.

My main style is go-go, with latino behind it. Both run on continuous movement and a large group, and both were built for a loud room rather than a quiet one.

I also have a fuller figure, and it says so here plainly because there is an audience looking for exactly that. The same programme and the same length as everyone else, simply a different type.

Go-go: what it actually is

It is the one style in the catalogue with no peak. Not a single twenty-minute number but three appearances of twelve to fifteen minutes with breaks between them.

Why: the group does not have to stop everything and watch. People keep talking, eating and drinking, and the evening gains a rhythm instead of stopping and restarting. With fifteen people that works far better than one long set.

What it needs: continuous music and room to stand. Real bass is not compulsory — continuity matters more than volume.

Pool parties

This is my favourite room, and in summer most of my bookings are there.

Three things to sort before I arrive: a dry area to one side rather than wet tile by the water, light at eye level rather than only from inside the pool, and a large towel within reach. And if most of the guests are in the water when I come out, half of them miss it, so time it around the food.

In winter the same energy moves into the living room, and there I need three metres by three of clear floor. Without it, better to book someone else than to squeeze me into a corner.

Latino: the part where you take part

Latino has one moment no other style has: I bring somebody out of the group for a few bars. I lead, I choose who, and it lasts less than a minute.

Anyone who does not want to just signals and I move on. It is not a test and not a surprise, which is also why I only do it once the room is warm rather than in the first minute.

My base is salsa and samba, so I work to a clear rhythm. If you want latino, it helps to have room for turns — this is a style that needs floor, not just a metre in front of a chair.

Who I suit and who I do not

I suit: groups of ten and up, bachelor parties, pool parties, gardens, evenings already at their peak. Also a duo — I work well in two, because in go-go it allows rotation and a longer run.

I suit less: an intimate evening for three people in a small living room. There is nobody to pass energy to, and in a room like that someone who works on closeness is the better call.

Why a duo suits me more than most

Go-go has no single peak, it has a run. Two dancers let you swap without stopping: one steps out, the other steps in, and the music never breaks. Instead of three appearances of fifteen minutes you get close to a continuous hour.

With fifteen people or more that is the difference between an evening with a show in it and an evening that has a rhythm all the way through. If the budget allows, for a large group it is a better upgrade than changing the style.

Three mistakes I have seen

Timing my appearance for when everyone is eating. A group holding plates does not react, and in go-go reaction is half the point. Twenty minutes later is better.

Pairing five phones to the speaker. Somebody gets a call, the music cuts, and the set restarts. One phone, ideally belonging to someone who is not moving.

Expecting me to warm up a cold room. I add energy to a group that is already in it. I do not start an evening that has not begun. If people have only just sat down, give them half an hour before I come out.

What I do not do

Worth stating so nobody discovers it halfway through. Guests do not initiate contact and I set the distance — that holds in the latino part too, where I bring somebody out for a few bars. No filming during the set: in go-go it costs more than in other styles, because I work forty minutes continuously and a camera in the room changes how I move. Before and after, as much as you like. And there is no set built on how I look as a joke.
