What the south gives that the centre does not
Two things that directly affect what I can do.
Space. Flats here are far larger, and a forty-metre living room is the default rather than the exception. For pole that is decisive — you need a clear circle of a metre and a half around the pole, and in a Tel Aviv flat that is almost always an argument.
Dry air. Summer nights in the Negev are cool, so a yard works even in August. It is close to the reverse of the coast, and in practice it means I do more outdoor evenings in the south than anywhere else.
The pole: what works and what does not

A professionally mounted pole — everything is possible. A pressure-mounted one — low work only, no inverts, and after a check I do myself. A decorative pole — I do not use it.
The check takes a minute. If something is wrong I say so at once and move to ethno or a club set, and the price does not change. It happens on roughly one evening in four, so it is worth knowing there is always a plan B.
And what I ask of you: wipe the pole before I arrive. Residue of cream or spray makes it slippery, and that cannot be fixed once we have started.
What being southern actually means
The same logic as for anyone living outside the centre, briefly.
The diary. An evening in Beer Sheva or Ashkelon is an ordinary evening for me, so I have far more dates there. Instead of two days’ notice it usually closes the way it would in Gush Dan.
Distances. I know the towns around, the road to Arad and Dimona, and the difference between an older and a newer quarter of Beer Sheva. That saves a round of questions.
Weather. I know when a Negev yard is still pleasant and when the night has already turned too cold, and that decides whether the evening happens outside or in.

Ethno without a pole
When there is no pole — which is most of the time — I work clean ethno: isolation, a coin belt, a long scarf.
My requirement then is the opposite of pole work: little floor, two metres by two is enough, but clear air above my head because of the scarf. A low chandelier in the middle of the room rules that part out, and then I work without the scarf — it still works, simply differently.
And I dance barefoot in that part. A thin rug or warm parquet beats cold tile.
Which group I am right for
Groups of eight to twenty, bachelor parties at a house with room, birthdays in a garden in summer, and anyone who has a pole at home and never knew what to do with it.
Less suited to a quiet evening for a couple in a small room — there someone who works on closeness serves better, and I will say so in a message rather than take an evening that will not work.
