Strippers in Neve Tzedek

The oldest neighbourhood in the city, and you feel it in every detail

Neve Tzedek was the first neighbourhood built outside Jaffa, in 1887, and the houses have stayed the size they were. Two storeys, small rooms, ceilings that are sometimes lower than you would expect. Many have been restored beautifully, but the shell is from another century and nothing can change that.

What it means in practice is that a show here is built differently from a show five minutes’ walk away. Florentin has hundred-square-metre lofts with concrete floors. This has a twenty-five-square-metre living room with a wooden one. The two neighbourhoods share a border and their conditions are opposite, which is why each has its own page rather than one page for the south of the city.

One shared wall, not two

This is the single most important thing about the area, and most people do not think about it until it is too late.

In an ordinary apartment building there are two walls between you and your neighbour with a gap in between. In Neve Tzedek the houses were built terraced, joined to each other, so the wall is one wall and both of you own a side of it. It is thick, but it is one. Bass travels through it better than anywhere else in Tel Aviv.

So the music runs with the low end pulled down and the dancer works with rhythm rather than volume. That sounds like a compromise and it is not. A close show in a small room builds tension better than a loud show in a hall; they are simply two different crafts. The dancers who are good at the first one are the ones we suggest here.

Wooden floors and stairs that creak

Most restored houses here went back to an original wooden floor or a convincing copy of one. It looks superb and it has two drawbacks worth knowing.

Wood carries footsteps downward far more than tile does. If your flat is on the first floor and someone lives below, that is the real consideration, not the music.

And heels on old wood slip less than on tile, which is good, but a lifted board or an open seam between planks is a genuine hazard. If there is a spot like that in the room, tell us and we will simply set the show up on the other side.

The stairs are worth a mention too. They are narrow, usually wooden, and there is no lift in any house in the neighbourhood. Two or three floors with a bag is fine — just say so in advance.

Lanes a car cannot enter

On Shabazi and the lanes running off it a car simply does not fit, and in some stretches two people walking side by side is a squeeze. The dancer arrives by booked ride to the nearest corner and walks from there.

That is why here, more than anywhere else, we ask for an exact pin and for someone to come out and meet her. Not because the address cannot be found, but because walking a lane at midnight with a bag looking for the right door is exactly what we are trying to avoid. It is also better for discretion: someone comes out, you go in together, and nobody is standing in the street.

For your own parking, the only thing that genuinely works is the car park at Suzanne Dellal or the ones along Jerusalem Boulevard in Jaffa. Looking for a space on the street here in the evening is wasted time.

Who books in Neve Tzedek

The mix is very different from its neighbours. Fewer large bachelor parties, more planned evenings for a small group: a birthday for eight, an evening for couples, sometimes a team evening for a small office based in the neighbourhood.

A large share of the bookings come from expensive short-let apartments taken for a weekend, and from guests visiting from abroad. Another share comes from the small boutique hotels on the edge of the area, and everything about that side of it is set out on the hotel booking page.

Small group rather than large

Worth saying plainly, because it is the common mistake here. Fifteen people in a twenty-five-metre living room do not enjoy the show. They stand pressed together and look at the back of someone’s head.

The number that works is six to ten. If you are more than that, there are two good options. A duo show splits the attention and works even in a narrow room. Or move the evening to another neighbourhood: a loft in Florentin or a larger flat in the centre is ten minutes away. We will say so in the messages if it looks like that is the situation.

What suits the neighbourhood

The audience here arrives with an eye, and not by accident: the Suzanne Dellal Centre for dance sits in the middle of the neighbourhood and a lot of the guests have seen real dance performances. That raises the bar and changes the choice.

What works: burlesque first, then pin-up and retro and fashion erotica. Lap dance works very well for a small closed group.

What does not: pole is impossible, there is no pole in a listed house and there never will be. Club sets need wide movement and space that does not exist here. The full catalogue with each dancer’s styles is a page away, and two obvious choices for this area are Lilit Morgan and Adella Gutman.

What cannot be done here

A short honest list, so you do not discover it on the night.

Nothing can be hung on the walls or the ceiling. Some of these houses are listed, and beyond that a hundred-year-old wall simply will not hold. No pole can be set up. Volume cannot run high after midnight without someone hearing it. And twenty people will not fit into the living room in any comfortable way.

What can be done, and this is the interesting part, is a close, precise and relatively quiet show, which in a small room lands harder than it would in a hall. That is exactly what people book here.

Neve Tzedek adjoins the centre, so arrival is quick: twenty to thirty minutes from the moment the details are agreed. There is no travel surcharge.

What is nearby

Neve Tzedek borders the city centre to the north, Florentin to the east and Jaffa to the south. All three are within walking distance, and in each of them the buildings and the rules are completely different.
